CAEF is pleased to Share the Introductory Message from Canada’s Special Envoy on Preserving Holocaust Remembrance and Combating Antisemitism

From the Office of Special Envoy on Preserving Holocaust Remembrance and Combatting Antisemitism

My name is Deborah Lyons. It is my honour to serve Canadians in the role of Special Envoy on Preserving Holocaust Remembrance and Combatting Antisemitism. I began my role shortly after the devastating events of October 7th and the wave of antisemitism that followed. I am aware of the daunting challenges that lie ahead for all of us and for Canada.

The only way forward is for all sectors of Canadian society to come together with complete determination to combat antisemitism so that the Jewish community is safe and free to be the critical and valued part of the Canadian family that it is. Please join me as I undertake this important work.

I intend this communique to be the first of a monthly communique from the Office of the Special Envoy. It is meant to keep you updated on our mandate and activities and to garner your input and guidance. Please do let us know if you do not wish to receive this by January 9, 2024, and we’ll be sure to remove you from the list. What is my mandate? The mandate of the Special Envoy on Preserving Holocaust Remembrance and Combatting Antisemitism stems from the commitments of the 2000 Stockholm Declaration, which include international and domestic components.

This renewed mandate additionally takes into account the pledges our Government made at the National Summit on Antisemitism (July 2021) and at the Malmö International Forum on Holocaust Remembrance and Combating Antisemitism (October 2021).

In 2021, the Liberal government gave $32 million to UNRWA.

How Will Canadian University Presidents Respond?

Following the incredibly discomforting responses from three US university presidents to questions from a Congresswoman demanding they indicate whether the call for genocide of the Jews is acceptable or opposed to university policies; and all 3 failed to condemn the statement and hid behind vacuous claims that it “depends on the context,” MP Anthony Housefather, Montreal, has called for the same accountability from all Canadian universities.

Housefather and four of his fellow Liberal caucus members co-signed a letter last week to presidents of 25 Canadian universities asking whether calling for the genocide of Jews violates their institutional policies.

CAEF congratulates the Members who took such action and eagerly awaits the results of the survey.
