Understanding the Islamist obstacles in the path to peace requires an understanding of the world view of Islamists, their reliance on the literal Quran and their misunderstanding of key passages. Islamic scholar and educator, Imam Tawhidi offers insights on the conflict that are ideological/religious, and the imperative to use the Quran itself to reverse this mis-understanding of the Jews’ place in the Islamic faith. That the Quran regards Israel as Jewish, just as Mecca is Islamic, that Al Aqsa is not in Jerusalem, that Jews are respected as “people of the book,” are the arguments to be made. A focus on freedom, democracy, equality, is unlikely to win the minds and hearts of the Islamists.
These three hours with Imam Tawhidi and Arabic scholar, Dr. Kedar, provide a unique opportunity to consider alternatives to refute the anti-Zionism, and Jew hatred associated with fundamentalist Islamism.
