CAEF calls for Mayor Chow to Resign after Falsely Accusing Israel of Genocide

The Canadian Antisemitism Education Foundation denounces Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow’s reckless disgraceful and irresponsible claim that there is a “genocide in Gaza”. Speaking at a National Council of Canadian Muslims event on November 1st, the Mayor had the audacity to compare Israel’s reaction to the war initiated by Hamas against Israel to that of the Japanese invasion of China during World War II.
Israel has repeatedly put its own soldiers’ lives at risk and suffered casualties to avoid civilian casualties. The only Gaza genocide was the massacre perpetrated by Hamas and its allies against Israelis on October 7, 2023. Somehow, we doubt that’s what the Mayor was referencing.
Mayor Chow’s claim that Israel is committing a genocide, is not only false and defamatory to the State of Israel and its people, it is a calculated insult to the almost two hundred thousand Jews in the Greater Toronto Area who support Israel, and it exposes the Jewish community to material risk of violence. Given the multiple violent attacks against Toronto’s Jewish businesses and community institutions since the October 7, 2023 massacre, Mayor Chow’s words will do more of the same. This is reprehensible and inexcusable.
Mayor Chow has now proven that she sides with the world-wide propaganda war against the 45% of all Jews in the world who live in Israel. She has sided with, and is giving aid and comfort to, Israel’s enemies.
She has manifestly demonstrated that she is unfit to continue as Mayor of Canada’s largest city. With those three words, she has utterly forfeited the confidence of Toronto’s Jewish community.
CAEF calls on Mayor Chow to immediately tender her resignation. CAEF, along with other Jewish organizations, asks the entire Jewish community of Greater Toronto to refuse to welcome Mayor Chow at any events in our community.
