CAEF Letter to Prime Minister Carney and Foreign Minister Anand Re: Canada's proposed recognition of "Palestine"

Rt Hon. Mark Carney, P.C., M.P.

Prime Minister of Canada

Hon. Anita Anand, P.C., M.P.

Minister of Foreign Affairs of Canada

Dear Prime Minister Carney and Minister Anand;

Canada’s recent statements at the UN Conference on recognition of a “Palestinian State”, coming less than two years since the atrocities of October 7, 2023 – the largest single-day massacre of Jews since the Holocaust -- are a slap in the face to Canada’s Jewish community.

You stated the Government of Canada’s policy that:

“Canada intends to recognize the State of Palestine at the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly in September 2025. This intention is predicated on the Palestinian Authority’s commitment to much-needed reforms, including the commitments by Palestinian Authority President Abbas to fundamentally reform its governance, to hold general elections in 2026 in which Hamas can play no part, and to demilitarize the Palestinian state. Canada will increase its efforts in supporting strong, democratic governance in Palestine and the contributions of its people to a more peaceful and hopeful future.”

So let’s get this straight: Canada recognizes the “State of Palestine” in the next 60 days, based on the Palestinian Authority’s scout’s honour promise to hold elections sometime in 2026 where Hamas plays no part, and that the Palestinian State be “demilitarized”.

CAEF asks that you clarify: If there are no elections in 2026, or Hamas “wins” the elections, or the Palestinian State is not demilitarized, whatever that means, will Canada revoke its recognition of this “State of Palestine”?

You don’t say.

If Canada recognizes this “State of Palestine”, does that mean:

  • Canada will recognize passports issued by this “State of Palestine” as valid for entry to Canada?

  • Canada will cooperate with the “State of Palestine” in law enforcement?

  • Canada will sell weapons to the “State of Palestine” – bearing in mind that the Palestinian Authority includes members of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine and other designated terrorist groups under the Criminal Code

  • Canada will hold the “Palestinian State” responsible for the release of the 50 hostages, some dead, some alive, still held captive by the “Islamic Resistance Movement” (HAMAS)?

You don’t say.

So is this recognition of the “State of Palestine” a serious foreign policy move, or just a propaganda exercise? Obviously, the answer is not behind Door #1. So let’s explore what’s behind Door #2

Canadian Jews are fed up with the endless anti-Israel hate mobs on our streets, and the discrimination we face in our educational and cultural institutions, our labor unions, and our workplaces.

  • We’re fed up with our synagogues being vandalized and firebombed.

  • We’re fed up with our religious schools being shot at.

  • We’re fed up with mobs attacking patrons at Jewish-owned restaurants and cafes.

  • We’re fed up with the persecution of dual Canadian and Israeli citizens and their being harassed by the RCMP for bogus “war crime” interrogations when they return to Canada.

  • We’re fed up with presumably respectable people desecrating the National Holocaust Memorial.

  • We’re fed up with school boards shoving virulently anti-Israel, and effectively antisemitic materials, into school libraries and lesson plans.

  • We’re fed up with our federal taxes being funnelled to corrupt United Nations agencies such as UNWRA that share personnel with HAMAS and effectively cooperate with them in holding the hostages.

  • We’re fed up with our federal taxes being funnelled to the Palestinian Authority (PA) which in turn operates a pay-to-slay program that places bounties on the heads of Israeli civilians, and has expended millions of dollars over many years in rewarding civilians for murdering Jews as well as rewarding Hamas, Palestinian Islamic Jihad, and Gazan civilians for massacring Jews on October 7, 2023

So don’t think for a minute that this is just a harmless exercise in appeasing the Israel-hating pressure groups. What you’re doing is pouring gasoline on each of the above fires and making Canada a place where Canadian Jews feel like strangers in their own country.

Tell us when you are going to actively address antisemitism in Canada and implement IHRA which the government adopted on June 25, 2019.

Sincerely,

ree
