Ms Kareen Rispal, Ambassador
French Embassy 42 Sussex Dr, Ottawa, ON K1M 2C9
Dear Ambassador Rispal,
It is with a heavy heart that I write this letter which I am sure replicates the many messages that France has received from Jews, Jewish organizations, friends and allies of the global Jewish community, who were shocked and disappointed with the decision of a French court to dismiss the case of the man who murdered Dr. Sarah Halimi in 2017.
It is clear that justice was not served, that a murderer was freed and might well pose an additional threat to Jews in France, and that French Jews feel and experience rising antisemitism. We join with our French compatriots and family members in urging that the government of France move quickly to amend legislation that has allowed this to happen, making it clear that voluntary usage of a drug like marijuana does not provide an excuse of mental disorder nor a pretext for wanton Jew hatred. Secondly, we urge that an appeal be considered and if not an available legal option that France respect the law in Israel that allows for a trial for a murderer or terrorist whose actions are motivated by anatisemitism and therefore Sarah Halimi’s murderer be extradited for such trial.
I am sharing a photo from the car rally organized in Toronto on April 25th that took place outside the French Consulate office and attracted 100 people, the majority being covid compliant and remaining in their cars.
Respectively,
Andria Spindel cc Consul Genera of France in Toronto
