Saudi born Omar Alghabra does not represent Canadian Jews

Omar Al Ghabra’s government appointment tells Jewish Canadians that they are second class citizens because of who they are, especially in their own house of democracy. It’s unacceptable

I devote my life to the defence of the Jewish State, with a Jewish majority, on both sides of the Jordan

Formal Antisemitism Complaint to Prime Minister Mark Carney

Subject: Serious Concerns Regarding Omar Alghabra’s Record on Hamas, Hezbollah, and Antisemitism

The Right Honourable Mark Carney

Prime Minister of Canada

Ottawa, Ontario

Dear Prime Minister Carney,

I am writing to express serious concern regarding the appointment of Omar Alghabra to the newly formed federal council for combating antisemitism. While I fully support the creation of such a council, Mr. Alghabra’s public record raises significant questions about whether he is an appropriate representative for this mandate.

Publicly available information shows that Mr. Alghabra has taken deeply troubling positions on issues directly related to antisemitism, terrorism, and extremist organizations.

According to widely circulated reports, Mr. Alghabra has:

  • Defended the National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM) against allegations of ties to Hamas.

  • Advocated removing Hamas and Hezbollah from Canada’s list of designated terrorist organizations, despite both groups being responsible for severe harm, loss of life, and human‑rights violations.

Evidence:

These positions are incompatible with the responsibility of combating antisemitism. Hamas and Hezbollah have long histories of targeting Jewish civilians, promoting antisemitic ideology, and destabilizing democratic societies. Any effort to remove them from Canada’s terror list directly undermines the safety of Jewish Canadians and contradicts the core purpose of an antisemitism council.

Antisemitism is a growing crisis in Canada, and it is being tolerated—sometimes even normalized—within certain political and institutional circles. That reality demands urgent attention and honest accountability.

In this context, appointing Omar Alghabra to help define or oversee Canada’s antisemitism policy sends a deeply troubling message to Jewish Canadians. His documented record—defending NCCM against allegations of Hamas ties while also advocating for the removal of Hamas and Hezbollah from Canada’s list of designated terrorist organizations—creates an unacceptable contradiction.

Allowing Mr. Alghabra to shape the definition of antisemitism is effectively telling Jewish Canadians that their safety, their history, and their lived experience are secondary considerations in their own democracy. It communicates that those who have minimized or excused extremist organizations can still be elevated to positions of authority over the very communities targeted by those groups.

This is not compatible with the principles of equality, dignity, or democratic representation. It is unacceptable.

It is therefore deeply concerning that Mr. Alghabra—despite this record—was appointed to your newly announced council during your recent visit to a synagogue. This decision risks sending a message that Canada is willing to overlook extremist‑aligned positions when selecting individuals tasked with protecting Jewish communities.

Canada must ensure that those entrusted with combating antisemitism have unambiguous records of opposing extremist organizations, rejecting antisemitic rhetoric, and supporting the safety of Jewish Canadians. Mr. Alghabra’s documented positions raise legitimate doubts about his suitability for this role.

Request for Action

Given the seriousness of these concerns, I respectfully request that your office:

  1. Review Omar Alghabra’s appointment to the federal antisemitism council.

  2. Clarify the criteria used to select members of the council.

  3. Ensure that future appointments reflect individuals with clear, consistent records of opposing antisemitism and rejecting extremist organizations.

  4. Affirm Canada’s commitment to protecting Jewish communities from hate, intimidation, and extremist influence.

Canada deserves an antisemitism council whose members have demonstrated unwavering commitment to combating hatred—not individuals whose past statements raise doubts about their alignment with that mission.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Respectfully,

YB
