Message from Kevin Vuong, MP, in response to concerns expressed about extremism and antisemitism following riots in Montreal.

Writer: CAEFCAEF

Thank you for bringing this important issue to my attention. I share your concerns about the recent violent protests in Montreal and the growing threat of extremism in Canada. These acts undermine the core values that define Canada as a peaceful, democratic nation.

I fully support a strong condemnation of these violent acts and the need for an investigation into foreign interference, particularly from groups like Hamas. I have been vocal on this issue since I became a Member of Parliament, emphasizing the need for urgent action from our government, and will continue to speak out:

  • Yesterday, January 21, I highlighted on my social media that calling for gun violence against an identifiable group, such as Jews or Israelis, constitutes public incitement of violence in violation of Section 319 of the Criminal Code of Canada.

  • On January 13, I also made it clear that while peaceful assembly is a right, protesting at the homes of public officials should not be tolerated in a democratic society. I called for an end to such intimidation and violence, emphasizing that it has no place in Canada.

  • On November 26, I expressed on the platform of X that the Montreal riots were a result of the government’s failure to enforce the law and secure our borders, warning that similar incidents could occur anywhere in Canada.

I have raised concerns multiple times in the House of Commons, including calling for a clear condemnation of Hamas on October 7, marking the anniversary of their brutal attack on Israel. On October 7th last year, I demanded the government clearly condemn Hamas, marking the first anniversary of their horrific attack on Israel. I also spoke out against domestic pro-Hamas supporters, including Ms. Albanese’s participation in a Hamas conference in 2022.

Further, I have advocated for the expulsion of individuals tied to terrorist organizations, such as Khaled Barakat, and presented a petition with nearly 13,000 signatures calling for action on Samidoun, a listed terrorist group. On December 4, I hosted a conference of the Global Imams Council. This platform allowed me to promote peace and collaborate with moderate Muslims who support pluralism and peaceful coexistence to combat extremism in Canada.

I invite you to look at all the actions I have taken to combat the rise of hate and violence, especially antisemitism, in Canada on my official website. You can read more about my efforts here: Combating the Rise of Hate & Violence in Canada. We must ensure that Canada remains a safe, democratic nation, free from foreign influence and radical ideologies. I remain committed to working with all levels of government to protect our communities and uphold the values that make Canada a beacon of democracy.

Thank you again for reaching out, I will continue to speak out on this critical issue and fight for action..

Thanks,

Kevin Vuong, M.P., F.R.S.A.
