As part of the Canadian Antisemitism Education Foundation’s Chinese–Jewish Exchange initiative, Leo Hu and Annette Poizner recently appeared on the Shalom Canada podcast to discuss the unusual “mirror” dynamic that brought them together.

Leo describes being deeply drawn to Jewish wisdom and culture, while Annette speaks about her longstanding immersion in Chinese philosophy and traditional thought. Coming from opposite directions, both arrived at a similar realization: that engaging seriously with another ancient civilization can create a kind of “binocular vision” for understanding the world. Like two lenses working together, each tradition sharpens and deepens the other, offering a broader perspective on ethics, identity, family, resilience, spirituality, and the challenges of modern life.

Their conversation explores how cross-cultural dialogue can move beyond politics or surface comparison into something more human and transformative: the discovery that wisdom traditions developed oceans apart may nevertheless illuminate one another in striking and meaningful ways.
