Letter from Ruth Abrams & 7 others to PM Mark Carney, Premier Doug Ford, Mayor Olivia Chow & other Leaders, asking what Jews must do for protection in Canada if govt isn’t protecting the community

Dear Prime Minister Carney and Leaders of Canada,

It is time to address the downward trajectory of the legal system in Canadian society when  more than half of charges concerning blatant hate crimes against Jews  are being summarily dropped in our courts ––– when outright, violent intimidation is granted full impunity.

This situation prompts Jews to ask existential  questions like:

• How exactly are we to protect ourselves?

• Should we register for gun ownership?

• Would you suggest bulletproof vests for our children?

• Who will pay for a police car to be parked in front of every Jewish school, camp, synagogue, institution?

• What is the plan to keep these places safe?

• Are there tax exemptions for all the expenses the average Jew entails to protect him/herself and children?

• When will hate incitement be punished in view of the open threat to Jewish camps?

• When and how can an effective security system be immediately put in place for each Jewish institution across Canada?

These questions are real and call for your immediate attention.
