Dear TPL Management,
I am writing to bring to your attention a serious concern regarding the children’s book Human Rights by Yayo Herrero (2025, Square Triangle / Seven Stories Press), which is currently in your collection.
A recent review by UK Lawyers for Israel (UKLFI) identified an illustration in the book that appears to depict an soldier with a Star of David in a menacing and demonized manner (see page 30). UKLFI has raised concerns that this image is harmful and likely to foster division among young readers. They have requested that the book be withdrawn from libraries until the illustration can be replaced.
As a public institution with a responsibility to foster understanding and inclusivity, I urge Toronto Public Library to review this material and consider temporarily removing it from the children’s collection. Ensuring that children’s literature does not convey harmful stereotypes or promote hostility is essential for promoting empathy, understanding, and a safe learning environment.
I also would encourage you to read this article to better understand why the illustration is harmful, and not aligned with your stated values: https://blogs.timesofisrael.com/antizionism-is-not-antisemitism/
Thank you for your attention to this matter. I would appreciate your response regarding the steps TPL intends to take.
Sincerely,
Daniel
