Media Bias Against Israel and What to Do About It
CAEF and Honest Reporting Canada hosted a very informative and meaningful event on May 27th at Beth Torah Synagogue addressing current bias in Canadian media, its impact and ideas for confronting it. Featured speakers were Rob Roberts, Editor-in-Chief of the National Post and Dave Gordon, freelance journalist. The evening was moderated by Mike Fegelman, Executive Director of Honest Reporting Canada, who pointed out his organization was founded in 2003 after abundant inaccurate reporting of the second Intifada in Israel.
Attended by about 200 concerned people, and welcomed by Rabbi Jennifer Gorman of Beth Torah, the dialogue between Roberts and Gordon provided anecdotes and personal stories outlining the nature and frequency of bias in major Canadian media, primarily print, radio and online. Asked what was different about the National Post, Roberts pointed out that from the beginning its founders embraced Zionism — in other words they recognized the rights of the Jewish people to a state in their ancient homeland. Additionally, they recognized the plague of antisemitism, its inherent danger to Jews globally and the relationship between antizionism and Jew hatred.
Roberts urged attendees to address the problem when they see it, take steps — politely and diplomatically — to call it out, to meet with editors and publishers, and raise the profile of Jew hate by naming and shaming proponents and propagandists. Gordon spoke of the lies he saw being created while observing media presence in Gaza while recently embedded with the IDF.
Fegelman raised questions about media integrity and academic journalism training. Roberts pointed out that it is often necessary to train a young person to investigate and report accurately, fairly and in a balanced manner, rather than to assume he or she were given this training today in college courses. In response to a question from CAEF President Michael Teper on the tracking of perpetrators of lies in the media, Fegelman confirmed that HRC has all reports online and searchable so one can see the repeated misinformation/disinformation dished up by a host of journalists and media sources.

Global Antisemitic Surge Since October 7th, 2023: Who/What Was Behind It?

Internet Warning Labels — An Initiative of the Toronto Holocaust Museum
According to Statistics Canada, 52% of youth between the ages of 15 and 24 report seeing online content intended to incite hate or violence at least once a month. Over the past three years, there has been a 350% increase in hate and misinformation content on TikTok & Instagram, and a 275% increase on YouTube.
The consequences of hate content online extend far beyond the digital world. Online hate and misinformation have been linked to the rise of real-world hate incidents across Canada, with Statistics Canada reporting that the number of police-reported hate crimes in Canada has more than doubled since 2018.
The Toronto Holocaust Museum recently developed and tested warning labels, called Hate Tags, on social media, designed to intercept the consumption of hate content and encourage consumers to think critically about what they are about to watch.
The Museum is now urging lawmakers to mandate these warning labels across all social media platforms. Sign the petition to drive the federal government to introduce legislation that mandates:
All social media platforms implement warning labels on content identified as hate speech or misinformation.
Establish national guidelines and definitions of hate speech and misinformation.
Ensure that warning labels are prominent, accessible and provide clear warning to help users think critically about the content they are consuming.

Milstein Family Foundation Stresses how Jews Must Respond to Rising Antisemitism
