TAKE ACTION

The Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (ETFO) has chosen Independent Jewish Voices, a fringe, anti-Zionist group to train its executive on antisemitism. At a time of rising antisemitism within Ontario schools, this is completely unacceptable.

Read article by Lynne Cohen in the National Post, February 10, 2026 which documents the antisemitism of IJV and its leadership.

Take action now and send a message to ETFO leadership to demand credible, representative antisemitism education. If you are a parent or grandparent who has had children in the Ontario public school system, send a letter to ETFO or sign the petition, demanding better choices for addressing antisemitism.

Legal Update:  The Verdict Is In

Jury Verdict in R. v. Deana SHERIF (Superior Court, Ottawa) -- Deana SHERIF was found guilty after a four week jury trial of one count of criminal harassment and one count of assault with a weapon.  Sentencing is scheduled for March 2026; CAEF will be filing a Community Impact Statement

SHERIF has been a notorious participant at many anti-Israel protests, including one at the Beth Avraham Yosef of Toronto synagogue where she frequently deployed her infamous high-pitched sound device on Jews protecting the synagogue.

R. v. Yves ENGLER  (Cour du Quebec, Montreal) - Yves Engler was found guilty of obstructing a police officer and criminal harassment.  CAEF has filed a Community Impact Statement, highlighting the fact that ENGLER obstructed the work of an office in the Hate Crime Unit of the Service de Police de la Ville de Montreal, on which the Jewish community relies to protect it from hate crimes.

R. v. Jennifer CLERMONT (Ontario Court, Toronto) - The Crown withdrew a charge of assault against CLERMONT for allegedly spitting on journalist Caryma S'ad's cameraman Adam Lee Wasserman calling him a "Zionist pig", at the corner of Yonge St. and Dundas St. in January 2025. See X posting and video

R. v. Jesse COOK (Ontario Court, Toronto) - the Crown withdrew charges of causing a disturbance and obstructing a police officer against COOK for disruptive behavior and jumping a barrier outside Roy Thomson Hall prior to a screening of the movie The Road Between Us as part of the Toronto International Film Festival.

PEO v. Bahira ABDULSALAM - The hearing into allegations of professional misconduct filed by CAEF members in relation to postings made by ABDULSALAM allegedly praising the October 7, 2023 atrocities was adjourned until June 4, 2026, to allow ABDULSALAM time to hire another lawyer and adduce an expert witness.  The Discipline Committee denied ABDULSALAM's preliminary motion to dismiss the allegations on the grounds summarily.

RCMP Press Release - Issuance of Terrorism Peace Bond To Radicalized Youth

Even in rural New Brunswick, radicalized youth are being arrested and released on terrorism peace bonds.  Read the RCMP Press Release dated February 4, 2026. Read the CBC News article.

Question:  If the peace bond was issued in 2025, why is the RCMP releasing information about it least 6 weeks later?

Education is NOT the Answer to Eliminating Antisemitism

It was the upper echelons of German society, the educated elite who promoted Nazism, denigration of Jews and ultimately the Shoah. People must consider that today’s antisemitism, disguised as antizionism, is flagrantly displayed on college campuses, promulgated by academics, embedded in curricula, foisted on students, and lies about Israel are presented as facts though uncorroborated and unsubstantiated. This should be well understood and efforts made to develop an effective strategy rather than simply saying, “ education is needed”. On what, by whom, when and where?

Reuven Brenner makes the case very lucidly in the article linked below.

Reuven Brenner

Brenner formerly held the Repap Chair at McGill University’s Desautels Faculty of Management and serves on the board of IEDM. He is the author of many books and monographs, including History: The Human GambleThe Force of Finance: Triumph of the Capital Markets (Thomson/Texere, 2002). He has also authored a series of articles on finance and currency issues for American Affairs.

Immediately after CAEF distributed petition e-7123 requesting the government to apologize for interning Jewish refugees from the Holocaust, holding them as criminals along with Nazis who entered Canada, the signature count went up by 300. If you have not yet signed, do so here. The petition needs 500 signatures by Feb. 27, 2026.

To understand the impact that this request could have, consider this statement from a child of a Holocaust survivor: “Just to let you know that I signed the petition and it has had a strong emotional impact on me. Finally, the trauma that my father experienced here in Canada, after being imprisoned in Buchenwald, may be recognized by others. He suffered in silence for the rest of his life."

The goal is bit remuneration, compensation, nor a mere apology. The petition asks that the government put out information on what took place, mark the9 internment sites with plaques and teach the truth about this abuse experienced by Jews coming to Canada in the wake of the Holocaust.

Canadian Jewish News published a feature and podcast on the petition and interviewed several historians.

CAEF at Conferences—Gaining Information, Taking Action

Reported by CAEF VP

Israel American Council Conference

Attending the IAC convention in Miami last month was a powerful reminder of the depth, resilience, and urgency within our broader Jewish community. The atmosphere was emotionally charged; stories from hostage families, interfaith voices, and countless personal encounters created a space where people weren’t just listening but truly connecting. For me, it felt like stepping into a living network of shared purpose. The mix of vulnerability and determination in every room reaffirmed why our work matters and why our presence in these spaces is essential. It was a moment to feel both supported and called upon, as if the community itself was saying: your leadership is needed, now more than ever.

What stood out most was how clearly the convention illuminated the path forward for organizations like CAEF. The experience underscored that people are craving initiatives that blend emotional honesty with strategic clarity. It highlighted the importance of building partnerships beyond our usual circles, amplifying authentic storytelling, and creating programs that strengthen identity while fostering unity. Coming back from Miami, I’m convinced that we have an opportunity—and a responsibility—to deepen engagement, broaden alliances, and design initiatives that reflect the courage, solidarity, and hope we witnessed. This convention didn’t just inspire; it provided a renewed mandate for how we can lead with purpose in the months ahead.

Global Peace for Israel Summit

Last month’s Global Peace for Israel Summit in Miami provided a timely and substantive forum for leaders, advocates, and community partners committed to Israel’s security and the pursuit of peace. The Summit brought together a diverse coalition of voices—Jewish organizations, civic leaders, interfaith partners, and international delegates—each contributing perspectives shaped by the current moment. The sessions were marked by a notable level of candor and emotional clarity. Speakers addressed the realities on the ground, the global rise in antisemitism, and the urgent need for coordinated advocacy. I found the environment both grounding and galvanizing. The conversations reinforced the importance of showing up in spaces where difficult truths are spoken openly and where collective responsibility is taken seriously.

From an organizational standpoint, the Summit offered several clear takeaways that can inform our strategic direction. First, it underscored the necessity of strengthening cross‑sector partnerships—particularly with civic and interfaith allies who are eager to collaborate but often lack structured pathways to engage. Second, it highlighted the growing demand for credible, values‑driven educational initiatives that help communities navigate complex narratives with nuance and integrity. Third, the Summit reaffirmed the importance of amplifying authentic voices—survivors, experts, and community leaders—who can speak to the moment with authority and empathy.

Read CJN news article on global antisemitism from the insight of various experts.

“In a recent talk, New York Times columnist Bret Stephens argued that American Jews should stop obsessing over antisemitism and refocus on Jewish identity. The provocation is useful, because it names a real pathology,” writes Jonathan Greenblatt, CEO and national director of the Anti-Defamation League, in an opinion piece for eJewishPhilanthropy. “When antisemitism becomes the primary organizing principle of Jewish public life, it weakens us. It can turn Jewishness into a defensive crouch — more alarm system than civilization.”

However: “The choice is not ‘fight antisemitism’ or ‘build Jewish life.’ Security and identity aren’t competing priorities; they’re inseparable preconditions for Jewish flourishing in an open society. Shutting down the Anti-Defamation League or other Jewish organizations is not some magic formula that promises self-reliance; it’s a disastrous prescription for unilateral disarmament. From vicious anti-Zionists to violent white supremacists, the threats to the Jewish community are multifarious, dangerous and real. The real question is whether we can do both — intelligently, without panic and with strategies that actually work.”

Read excerpts.

“When Constantin Zurieq first gave meaning to the Nakba in 1948, what was most conspicuously absent were the Palestinians themselves. The Nakba was defined not as their catastrophe, but as the failure of an abstract “Arab Nation” to annihilate Israel. “

“Palestinians did not yet possess an independent nationalism for the simple reason that they were presumed already absorbed into the imagined destiny of a unified Arab future. Only the exhaustion and collapse of Arab Nationalism—still lingering in traces among Palestinians—forced them into becoming Palestinians, inheriting the Nakba’s symbolic apparatus and fusing it with their own lived dispossession. Out of this transfer, a new national identity emerged, but one constructed on ground already staked out: it was defined as the negation of Israel. No alternate foundation was sought, no independent ideological meaning beyond the struggle against Zionism.”

Zoom on Sunday February 15th at 7 pm Eastern Time for an important update on antisemitism/antisemitism from nationally acclaimed author and expert on antisemitism, Dr. Andrew Pessin. Register here.

Andrew Pessin is Professor of Philosophy at Connecticut College and was for many years Campus Bureau Editor for The Algemeiner. He also most recently founded the Institute for the Critical Study of Antizionism. Author of many academic articles and books as well as works of philosophy for a general audience, his books include Israel Breathes, World Condemns (2 vols.); Refuting the Lies Told About Israel; Anti-Zionism on Campus: The University, Free Speech, and BDS; Poisoning the Wells: Antisemitism in America; and The Jewish God Question: What Jewish Thinkers Have Said About God, the Book, the People, and the Land. His articles address many aspects of the campus environment for Jews and for Israel supporters, including the question of whether anti-Zionism is antisemitism (the short answer is that it is). Most recently he has been producing a weekly ten-minute podcast on the highlights (and lowlights) of that week’s campus antisemitism, available via his substack. He has also published four novels, including Nevergreen (2021), an academic satire about campus cancel culture and its deleterious effects on the Jews which, unfortunately, proved prophetic when campuses exploded against Israel and the Jews after the October 7 massacre. His most recent novel, Bright College Years (2024), is about how colleges used to be before they all went crazy.
