Dear Director Thompson, Associate Director Woo, and Instructor and Program Director Graham,

Carlton's School of Journalism and Communication is to be congratulated for holding an event to honor the memory of Shireen Abu Akleh, and to awarding the Social Justice Journalism Award posthumously. This brave woman should be in our memories forever as should the 12 other Al Jazeera journalists and photographers who were killed in battle zones, mainly in Syria.

It is quite tragic that most of us don't know a single name of these brave Al Jazeera journalists and photographers, but I guess no one pays attention if they didn’t get killed by Jews.

There are also 1200 other Journalists from all around the world who have been killed in battle zones who should be honored. You should also honor Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich who was allegedly kidnapped by Russia authorities and is currently languishing in prison.

Choosing to honor the one journalist killed by Israelis suggests that the School of Journalism is less interested in the overall welfare and contributions of the journalistic profession than it is in using Akleh as part of an ongoing anti-Israel PR smear campaign.

Thank you for honoring all Journalists who risk their lives to bring us the news. I hope it's not too late to use Akleh as a symbol of the dangers confronted by the wonderful talented people who bring us the news.

Sincerely yours,

Larry Shapiro, Calgary
