The first Jew arrived in New Amsterdam as early as 1585. Jews experienced discrimination from their first arrival to the colonies, through the centuries, but contributed to all facets of American life. Their numbers grew to over 6 million today and despite rising antisemitism, Jews continue to play a very significant role. Read the timeline of Jewish migration to America.

Legal Update
1. Mohamed Ilyes AKODAD – Guilty of Arson and Mischief to Religious Property – Firebombing of Congregation Beth Tikvah and Federation CJA (Montreal QC) in February 2024.
The sentencing hearing of Mohamed AKODAD took place in a Montreal courtroom on June 30, 2026. Community Impact Statements were delivered by the cantor of Congregation Beth Tikvah and Federation CJA of Montreal. The defendant offered the court what appeared to be an implausible explanation that he was to be paid $15,000 for each act of arson, that he was high on cannabis and codeine at the time he committed the offences (December 18, 2024), and that he did not realize that the buildings he was setting on fire were a synagogue and Jewish community centre.
The defence has requested a conditional sentence including four months of house arrest; the Crown is seeking a sentence of two years less credit for time served. Quebec Court Judge Karine Giguère is scheduled to pronounce the sentence on September 10.

Advocacy and Action
Petition to the Government of Canada
Whereas:
The Government of Canada has designated the regime of Iran as a state supporter of terrorism and listed the IRGC as a terrorist entity;
The people of Iran have the fundamental right to determine their political future and enjoy freedom, dignity, and self-determination;
Credible reports indicate widespread crackdowns, including mass arrests, killings, and persecution of civilians, with reports that more than 40,000 civilians were murdered in January 2026;
Since March 2026, authorities have imposed internet shutdowns to suppress dissent, while escalating arrests and executions linked to recent protests in January 2026;
Iranian activists risk detention, torture, or execution if returned to Iran, including possible deportation from countries such as Turkey, Armenia; and
The Iranian-Canadian community has demonstrated strong solidarity through large-scale civic action, including a February 14, 2026 rally in Toronto with over 450,000 participants.
We, the undersigned, residents of Canada, call upon the Government of Canada to:
Take leadership at the UN to address human rights violations in Iran;
Advance the (R2P) and ensure Canada does not vote in favour of actions that benefit the Iranian regime;
Condemn and coordinate with international allies to immediately halt all executions of political prisoners in Iran;
Immediately prioritize and fast-track immigration and asylum applications of Iranian activists at risk of deportation from Turkey and Armenia;
Strengthen screening and enforcement against individuals in Canada with ties to the regime or IRGC, including review of those involved in official negotiations with international bodies like the World Trade Organization; and
Expand support for tools that enable secure access to a free and open internet in Iran.
The Winnipeg Sun has published an online poll asking “Has the Canadian Museum for Human Rights lost its credibility with its one-sided Nakba exhibit?”
Call Out FIFA’s Double Standard
The Anti-Defamation League issued this petition noting anti-Israel discrimination.
At the 2026 World Cup, a fan was ordered to remove his Israeli flag while Palestinian flags nearby were left untouched. This double standard treats Jewish and Israeli supporters as second-class participants in a global celebration.
FIFA rules are clear: all flags must follow the same conduct standards. Yet when enforcement differs based on which country’s flag you’re flying, the burden unfairly falls on Jewish and Israeli fans.
That’s not soccer. That’s discrimination.
Join the ADL in demanding that FIFA enforce the same rules for all fans.
