Anti-Israel Organizations File Abusive and Vexatious Claims Against Jewish Schools

On April 22, 2026, "Just Peace Advocates," "Palestinians and Jews United," the "Canadian Foreign Policy Institute," and the "Ontario Palestinian Rights Association" jointly announced that they filed complaints with the Canada Revenue Agency against eleven Jewish day schools across Canada regarding the schools' education programs which speak positively about Israel and Zionism. The complaint alleges that the schools' programming in support of Israel causes them to violate Canadian tax law regarding charities by rendering assistance to the Israel Defence Forces.

The schools targeted by the complaints are:

Associated Hebrew Schools of Toronto (AHS)
The Bnei Akiva Schools of Toronto (BAS Toronto)
The Toronto Heschel School
Netivot HaTorah Day School
TanenbaumCHAT
Bialik Hebrew Day School
The Leo Baeck Day School
Bialik High School
Herzliah High School
Hebrew Academy of Montreal

One of the schools whose activities attracted the anger of Just Peace Advocates, the Toronto Heschel School, was described on their website as:

"A Jewish day school in Toronto serving JK to Grade 8. The school stands firmly in support of Israel, and its curriculum emphasizes Jewish unity and Zionism. It has also hosted performances by the IDF Nachal Band, as well as organized fundraisers for groups aiding 'lone soldiers' in the Israeli military (non-Israeli Jews serving without family support in Israel)."

The school hosted a performance by a visiting band, and helped some unspecified "groups" organize a fundraiser for lone IDF soldiers. There is no evidence, according to the Just Peace Advocates website, that a single dollar for which a CRA charitable receipt was issued was directed toward the support of the IDF.

We know who is behind this latest round of persecuting Jewish institutions. One of the leading personalities is Yves G. Engler, rejected candidate for federal NDP leader, and three-time convicted criminal.

The Center for Israel and Jewish Affairs ("CIJA") has responded to this latest threat, saying:

"There is a coordinated campaign to erase Jewish life in Canada. And it is not only being waged through violence and intimidation. For months, a veritable witch hunt across various channels has targeted all Jewish community institutions with the goal of erasing Jewish life in this country. Today, this campaign, orchestrated by radical anti-Jewish and anti-Israel groups, has crossed a new threshold by attacking our community's schools, with a clear and blatant intent to weaponize the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). Fringe activists have filed malicious complaints targeting 11 of our schools across Canada, as well as members of our community. The goal is not transparency, but a blatant desire to paralyze and destroy Jewish community life in Canada. Targeting our schools means targeting our children, and that is unacceptable."

CMHR Challenged as Nakba Exhibit Stokes Antisemitism

The Canadian Museum of Human Rights, funded by the federal government and initiated by the late Jewish philanthropist Izzy Asper, has spent two years working around historical facts with a biased, anti-Israel focused advisory committee to create an exhibit entitled, "Palestine Uprooted: Nakba Past and Present," that is to open in June this year. CAEF and many others have sent letters to the administration challenging this exhibit, but to no effect.

Now we have a very critical analysis of the exhibit and the process that led to it by two experts, Dr. Bryan Schwartz and Rhonda Spivak.

ALCCA (Alliance of Canadians Combating Antisemitism), of which CAEF is a founding member, has released a statement about this exhibit and a plan for mobilizing Jewish and allied responses to this abomination.

Legal Update

Deana SHERIF

On May 1, 2026, CAEF President Michael Teper will read out in court a Community Impact Statement at the sentencing hearing of Deana SHERIF at the Superior Court of Justice in Ottawa. Following a jury trial, SHERIF was convicted of one count of Assault with a Weapon (against Member of Parliament Brad Vis) and one count of Criminal Harassment (against the Jewish Federation of Ottawa). SHERIF came to the attention of Canada's Jewish community when she attended an anti-Israel demonstration in front of the Beth Avraham Yosef of Toronto (BAYT) synagogue in March 2024, where she repeatedly aimed her FOX 40 directed sound device at pro-Israel counterdemonstrators, including Mr. Teper.

David Frank SHULTZ

The trial of David F. SHULTZ opened at the Ontario Court of Justice at Toronto. SHULTZ stands charged of possession of a weapon dangerous to the public peace, common nuisance, and wearing a disguise with the intent to commit a criminal offence. The charges result from SHULTZ's appearance at Sankofa Square (formerly Yonge-Dundas Square) in Toronto while dressed in a black balaclava with a white headband, combat trousers and carrying a 1-metre long samurai sword with a wooden blade. At the time, SHULTZ was an Ontario Certified Teacher with Active status.

Mikhail BYKOV

CAEF will be filing a joint Community Impact Statement with the Alliance of Canadians Combatting Antisemitism (ALCCA) in the case of Mikhail BYKOV. BYKOV was found guilty in the Ontario Court of Justice at Toronto for wilful promotion of hatred. In the months immediately following the October 7, 2023 atrocities, BYKOV posted flyers in the Davenport/Dupont neighbourhood of Toronto.

Keosha ROSS

On March 17, 2026, Keosha ROSS was found guilty of uttering threats of bodily harm in the Ontario Court of Justice in Toronto. The charges flow from an incident in an elevator in the Ontario Court of Justice building, where ROSS told an Assistant Crown Attorney prosecuting her that she would "rip off her big Jewish nose."

CAEF will join in filing a Community Impact Statement in this case.

ALCCA Commentary on the Mona AYESH Case — Reported in Last Week's Bulletin

Last week, we reported on the sentencing hearing of Mona AYESH in the Ontario Court of Justice at Toronto. AYESH received a suspended sentence (which includes a criminal record) after being found guilty of theft under $5,000 for stealing an Israeli flag at a demonstration at the corner of Bathurst St and Sheppard Avenue in Toronto in February 2025. Melanie Bennett is a journalist with Juno News who has been investigating what is happening in education across Canada, from lowering of student performance, to adoption of identity and geopolitical causes in curriculum, to activist teachers and boards, and the misuse of resources for events and programs that have no bearing on education. One of the most intrusive policies that has impacted education, pushed divisiveness not unity among students, ignored traditional Canadian values, and built on the fabricated dichotomy of oppressed and oppressor to explain every disparity in life, is Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. This has huge bearing on Jews in public education as well as on all students; essentially teaching an ideology built on the woke idea that race permeates every action and determines every outcome, placing Jews in the hierarchy of white supremacists and denigrating any achievements based on personal ability or effort.

Rally to Stand Together, for Jews and Iranians, Drew Thousands

On Sunday April 26, a few thousand people gathered in downtown Toronto to hear solidarity remarks, fly flags of Israel, US, Canada and the Persian flag of Iran — the lion and sun — while shouting support for Prince Reza Pahlavi. While the organizer, Allied Voice for Israel, was not promoting a political position for Iran, they welcomed the magnificent turnout of allies for Israel and the US in their war against the Islamic regime of Iran.

Elected officials who attended included Lynn Smith, MPP, Michel Kerzner, MPP, and Michael Parsa, MPP, who all gave impassioned speeches. The theme Standing Together demonstrates what the future may hold for Iran and Israel.

Community Safety Briefing at Beth Torah Synagogue

On April 27, representatives from several levels of government and Toronto Police Services convened a meeting under the auspices of Beth Torah Congregation, chaired by a member of the synagogue. Representatives spoke for their respective governments, but it also set the tone of speaking for themselves in expressing solidarity with the Jewish community. Federal Member Vince Gasparro outlined all the new initiatives of the Liberal government to counter hate and to fund security. City Councillor Mike Colle candidly spoke of the lack of support from the Mayor and some members of Council while expressing sincere empathy and concern for a community he has known and represented for a long time. A representative for Lily Cheung, City Councillor, spoke of how supportive Cheung is of the Jewish community. Jonathan of the Jewish Security Network outlined concerns, fears and steps being taken to address rising antisemitism.

Members of the Toronto Police Services were there in significant numbers and responded directly to questions. We are assured, despite appearances, that the service is fully committed to the safety of our community.
