Justice Harry LaForme at Shabbat Service: What the Prime Minister Should Have Said

As part of the Indigenous-Jewish friendship weekend, several Indigenous leaders spoke at Shabbat services at different synagogues in Toronto. Justice Harry LaForme spoke at Temple Sinai and made a powerful impact on the well-attended congregational service.

Jewish Views on PM Carney's Speech on Antisemitism

A smattering of articles provides an overview of Jewish opinion — Carney fails.

In addition to missing the point during his speech at Holy Blossom Temple on June 1, at which time the PM admonished immigrant communities for bringing their hatred, biases and belligerence to Canada and then attacking other communities, which Jews have never done, he also announced the appointment of a radical antizionist whose past reads like a litany of antisemitic hatred.

Read Adam Hummel in his Substack, Catch, titled A Slap in the Face, June 2, noting his view that the PM's speech did not show any understanding of the situation Jews face in Canada.

Read this excerpt referring to the speech by Carney:

"On the same day, Toronto police announced that five people — Hosaam Hemdan, Omer Turcan, Syed Hussaini, Hasan Aydin and Yasaf Shaikh — had been arrested for allegedly holding blatantly antisemitic signs at an anti-Israel rally.

A month earlier, Toronto residents described by police as “visibly identifiable members of the Jewish community” sustained minor injuries following a drive-by shooting with a “replica firearm.” The following week, people standing in front of a synagogue were targeted in a similar attack. A day after the second shooting, police arrested 18-year-old Ruslan Novruzov.

Although not much is known about Novruzov, his surname is common in Azerbaijan, a 97.3 per cent Muslim-majority country where 53 per cent of the population harbour antisemitic views, according to the Anti-Defamation League’s Global 100 index.

Yet anyone who read the CBC’s story on the arrest would not have known Novruzov’s name, because the public broadcaster chose not to publish it. And this is not the first time this has happened."

Legal Update

Note: This update was written prior to the June 7, 2026 Walk with Israel, and does not take into account legal developments arising from the Walk event.

1. David F. SHULTZ Walks Free of All Charges; Ontario College of Teachers Complaint Continues.

Notorious Bathurst Street and Sheppard Avenue protester David F. SHULTZ is now free of all previously pending criminal charges stemming from his appearances at this street corner at the heart of Toronto's Jewish community, and from his appearances at the corner of Yonge St. & Dundas St.

After 25 preliminary appearances in the Ontario Court of Justice, the Crown withdrew a charge of obstruction of a police officer in connection with the Bathurst St. protests, and SHULTZ was found not guilty of charges of common nuisance, possession of a dangerous weapon and wearing a disguise with the intent to commit a crime, in connection with the Yonge/Dundas incident.

Now that he is no longer subject to a criminal justice process, the release conditions previously preventing SHULTZ from appearing at Bathurst & Sheppard are no longer in force.

The community is advised to report any further anti-social behaviour by this worthy gentleman to CAEF, the Jewish Security Network and/or Toronto Police.

An Ontario College of Teachers complaint against SHULTZ remains in progress.

2. Public Incitement of Hatred; Wilful Promotion of Hatred Charges Laid against the Bathurst & Sheppard Hateful Six.

On March 16, 2026, CAEF President Michael Teper received a home visit from the Toronto Police Service, during which he reported Muhammad Anas SIAL for displaying hateful messaging at the north-east corner of Bathurst & Sheppard in Toronto. The Toronto Police investigation resulting from this report has led to Public Incitement of Hatred and Wilful Promotion of Hatred charges being laid against six individuals named below.

Importantly, both the Jewish community and the Israeli community were named as the "identifiable groups" that were the targets of the hateful messaging. The wording of these criminal informations reflects a developing understanding by the Ministry of the Attorney General that hateful messaging that targets Canadians of Israeli national origin is also subject to the Criminal Code.

3. Charges Laid against Synagogue Shooters.

The Toronto Police Service continues to lay charges in the March 6 and March 7, 2026 shootings at the Beth Avraham Yoseph of Toronto (BAYT) and Shaarei Shomayim synagogues. Here are the latest announcements from the police blotter.

4. Toronto Police Announce Intent to Arrest Disruptors of Walk with Israel.

Toronto Police Service Deputy Chief Frank Barredo, at a June 5, 2026 press conference, publicly committed the Toronto Police Service to laying criminal charges for mischief, intimidation, and/or hate speech against those who attempt to disrupt the Walk with Israel to be held on Sunday June 7, 2026.

If you witness what you believe to be criminal activity, please immediately inform event organizers, take pictures and videos, and report it to Toronto Police.

You can call the Toronto Police Service main line at 416-808-2222 after the event is over to file a report from the comfort and safety of your home.

5. Toronto Police Announce Four Additional Arrests in Bathurst St. Synagogue Gel Gun Shootings.

Earlier this week, the Toronto Police Service announced that charges were laid against Luka CHOKHELI (assault with a weapon, possession of a weapon) and Alishahin ISAYEV (assault with a weapon ×3, possession of a weapon, mischief — interference with the use or enjoyment of property). Two persons whose identities are embargoed under the Youth Criminal Justice Act were also charged.

CAEF will be following the progress of these cases through the court system, and will encourage the Crown Attorney to treat these offences as motivated by hate bias or prejudice in the event the accused are found guilty.

Anyone with information about these incidents is encouraged to report the information to the

Toronto Police Service at 416-808-2222.

6. Adham DIABAS Found Guilty of Assault Police Officer and Assault Police Officer with Weapon.

The 2024 UJA annual fundraising event, held at Meridian Hall at Yonge St. and Front St. in downtown Toronto on September 11, 2024, was marred by an anti-Israel demonstration outside the building. Details of the incident can be found here: CRIME SCENE: Dangerous offender on the loose say Toronto Police | Toronto Sun. On May 29, 2026, DIABAS was found guilty of both charges. He is scheduled to be sentenced July 10, 2026.

Find out more about the criminal defendant facing sentencing: Adham Diabas — Canary Mission.

CAEF intends to file a Community Impact Statement relating to these offences, and will request the Crown Attorney to treat them as motivated by hate bias or prejudice. Even though the direct victims of the assaults were not members of the Jewish community, they were committed against Toronto Police Service constables carrying out their sworn duty to protect members of the Jewish community at one of its most important and prominent public fundraising events. In the context and circumstances, these assaults are, in our view, attempts to intimidate the Toronto Police Service against protecting the Jewish community, and have the effect of intimidating members of the community from attending these events. Those who attend these events, or are thinking of attending, would observe that even armed police officers protecting the event are being attacked, and would reason that they are even more vulnerable to attack if they appear for the event. These assaults therefore have the effect of deterring members of the Jewish community from lawfully attending major community events, and are therefore attacks on the community's civic equality. CAEF's position is that DIABAS intended this result, and was therefore motivated by hate bias or prejudice in carrying out these assaults.

For the fourth year in a row, on Sunday, June 14th, 2026, 3:00 PM – 5:30 PM, we honour the bravery of the people of Iran and stand with them in their fight for freedom.

We gather to commemorate the extraordinary life and legacy of Majidreza Rahnavard on his birthday. He was a political prisoner in Iran who was tragically executed by the brutal regime for his unwavering spirit and his display of remarkable bravery.

In an act of unimaginable courage, Majidreza Rahnavard got a tattoo of the lion and sun on his forearm — a symbol of resilience and national pride. However, the regime broke and burned his arm as a malicious act of suppression, tortured him and executed him. Despite the suffering inflicted upon him, Majid Reza Rahnavard urged the people not to mourn his fate but instead to celebrate the cause for which he died.

Attendees will include former political prisoners, journalists, families of the victims of terror, human rights activists, MPs, MPPs and more.

To participate, please reserve your spot: https://MajidrezaRahnavard2026.eventbrite.ca

You will receive the location and event details via email after confirmation. Feel free to share the flyer and registration link. See you all.
